An Action-Packed August

This back-to-school season, the learning and fun never stops at Fernbank with exciting exhibits, films, events and more.

FINAL MONTH OF MIRRORS August is the last full month to discover A Mirror Maze: Numbers in Nature   before it closes Sept. 9. Play with digital components, explore different objects and venture into the 1,700 square-foot mirror maze to learn about naturally occurring patterns.

 

 

FROLICKING WITH FOREST FORMS — Journey into WildWoods and discover the 18 towering metal sculptures of flowers and animals in Forest Forms, created by local artist Huelani Mei (read her interview with us here).

 

 
AFTER-HOURS FUN FOR ALL — Enjoy these warm summer nights while they last by attending one of our two after-hours events: Fernbank After Dark: Sense-ational Science on Aug. 9 (21+ only) and Fernbank... but Later: Fossil Friday on Aug. 30 (all ages).

 

 

TRAVEL THROUGH TIME IN THE THEATER — Premiering Aug. 30 is our newest film in the Giant Screen Theater, Cities of the Future, where you can discover exciting innovations engineers are working on right now to meet the challenges of a changing world.

 

 

PLANTS, PIGMENTS AND PIECES OF ART — Beginning Aug. 31, you can discover the world of yellow plants and pigments in our special exhibit, Golden Opportunity: Botanical Illustration! To get ready for the exhibit, here are a few plant-based activities you can check out:  
 

Piedmont Park Arts Festival | 4.5 miles from Fernbank

o Attend the Piedmont Park Arts Festival, one of the top 100 arts festivals, on Aug. 17 or 18! Enjoy 250 painters, photographers, sculptors and more as you wander through the park. Admission is free. 

 

Run for the Park 5K | 4.7 miles from Fernbank

o Help support the Grant Park Conservatory with a 5K through the historic Grant Park neighborhood! This race also kicks off the Summer Shade Festival, a free outdoor festival celebrating Atlanta’s oldest public park. The race is Aug. 24 and $40 to sign up. 

 

Gardening for Beginners Class | Around Atlanta

o On Aug. 24 at any of their participating stores, you can attend an hourlong class at Pike Nurseries to cultivate your green thumb and learn how to garden! This is perfect for those new to gardening and want to develop some skills before taking the first dig. Tickets are free but require registering.
