Fernbank wouldn’t be what it is without its wonderful volunteers! As we wind down 2023, we’d like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to each and every person who has dedicated their time and energy to help facilitate Fernbank’s mission to ignite a passion for science, nature and human culture through exploration and discovery. Without the support of our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to stand as a beacon of education and culture in Atlanta. Thank you all for that you do to support Fernbank Museum every day!
While we are grateful for all our volunteers, two individuals really stood out this year as going above and beyond the call to serve, which earned each of them the title of “Volunteer of the Year.” Learn a little more about some of the people who make Fernbank great below!
Chuck Girardeau
Chuck is an Atlanta native and has lived in the metro area for most of his life. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Geology from Emory University and his Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary.
Chuck was inspired to volunteer with Fernbank when he visited the museum with his family back in 2016. Chuck’s favorite place to volunteer at Fernbank is the A Walk Through Time in Georgia desk, where he can share his immense knowledge of the rocks, fossils and minerals of Georgia. Chuck loves seeing guests’ eyes light up when they experience the diversity and beauty of our state’s geology.
Drennan Barnes
Drennan has been a Fernbank patron for years, and when they heard about the volunteer opportunities that Fernbank offers, they were really excited to join. Since becoming a Fernbank Youth Interpreter (FYI) in June 2022, Drennan’s favorite volunteer activities include assisting with summer camps and training their fellow volunteers.
Drennan credits Fernbank with building their confidence and helping them become more comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people. They aspire to study marine ecosystems and conservation. In their free time, Drennan enjoys running, water skiing, woodworking and art.
Volunteers are essential to the success of Fernbank, from greeting guests to assisting with forest restoration. If you’re interested in becoming a Fernbank volunteer, click here to learn more.
